How to get a Strike!

This is a basic guide on the principles required to get a strike, as written by me (DAKfromOZ). The line used is my favourite line, but where you start from and where you aim for is not the most important thing.. you may find that a different line works better for you and my line is actually not common among the better bowlers. I should point out though that the line used in this tutorial has been used in at least 75% of my 250+ perfect games, so in that respect i think I have proven that it works !!!

Firstly, SPEED DOES NOT HELP !! You will have noticed that when you release the ball, if you release it quick enough then the aiming arrow remains red and the ball goes faster. This does NOT help you get strikes. Always use the minimum speed, ie. take your time aiming.

The object is to have a consistent ball that you can repeat over and over and get strikes with. The pins react in a similar way in most respects to the real game, so if you bowl you will have an edge.

Large curves are not easy to repeat consistently and should therefore be avoided. A straight ball with a late curve are much easier to repeat.

There is no ideal spot to start from, nor is there an ideal line. It comes down to what works for you at any given time. The key points are:

Be consistent. Bowl from the same place. Aim for the same spot. This allows you to develop your sense of timing.. exactly when to curve the ball. You can of course experiment with different lines to see which works well for you, but give it a chance ! Take some time with each line before you give up on it.. you will need time yourself to get used to the timing of it.

Curving the ball is done by left clicking to curve it left and right clicking to curve it right. When you click, the important thing is to click JUST ONCE, and when you click HOLD IT DOWN until the pins stop moving. This again allows you to keep a consistent ball, and holding it down when you click will ensure that the ball keeps spinning whilst in the pins, improving your pin count.

PRACTICE is the most important and forgotten concept. These pointers will help your game, but the ultimate teacher is experience. Dont expect to bowl a 300 in your first 1000 games... it just doesn't happen.

Some screenshots below will show you the line I use the most. Remember, most of the elite bowlers bowl different, but similar lines. Many come from the left and use a right click. The important thing is to keep it tight and come from a reasonably central line. Big curves do not help you, they are more likely to get splits. Coming from a wide angle is also likely to get more splits.

Note that the shadow of the ball is touching the centre dot. The yellow arrow is pointing directly between the 1 and 3 pin ( The head pin and the one to its right ) The arrow is yellow as I have taken plenty of time to aim, and the ball will go at minimum speed.

You can't see it yet, but in about a millisecond the close up screen will pop up. Notice the arrow next to the ball. This arrow appears as you click, pointing in the direction you are curving the ball. In this ball i used a left click, but of course if you were coming from the other direction you would use a right click. Remember, when you do click, HOLD IT DOWN for at least two seconds, in order to get more pin action.

The close up screen pops up only a millisecond after I have left clicked. I held it down, and it drove through for a clean strike !! Timing is everything.

Of course you arent going to get a countdown on when this closeup screen will pop up. I just use it as as easy and approximate guide. You will learn with practice and your timing will improve, until you left click with instinct rather than thought.

You will discover what is meant by pinsets and how they vary. You'll need to do this to advance further, but I have tried to keep this tutorial simple, as its aimed at the beginner, and not complicate it with TOO much information. You will find that once you get good at this, you will probably be able to figure out the more advanced stuff yourself anyway.

GOOD LUCK, dont be afraid to experiment a little with where you bowl from, but remember, CONSISTENCY AND TIMING are the key to good bowling... !!!
